Since around 2012 or so I've made quite a bit of visual artwork (which you can see at AdamWattsCreations.com)... mostly mixed media assemblage (putting together objects to express something)... I have a piece called "Intermittent Isolation Syndrome"... aka I.I.S. (ha). It's a half-sarcastic mostly serious, self diagnosis with a name I made up. If you have this syndrome, hopefully this song hits the spot.
This song is about my paradoxical need to be both left alone and totally leaned into and loved (probably annoying... or, for sure annoying). Obvious from the title, eh?
Once this song was virtually done... I felt it needed some final touches... and given the song is relational in its content... it just felt right to invite in a couple of talented friends of mine who I know deal with the same kind of inner turmoil... so, Cory Clark laid down some really great lead guitar parts and Enoch Yang (and former student of mine at Biola) put some of his Roli Synth on it (which is kind of like a fretless keyboard---the nth version of a steel guitar in some ways---it's swoopy and bendy and all around awesome). big thanks to them for bringing their soulfulness to this track. Total Cherry on Top.
lyrics
HOLD ME TIGHT, LEAVE ME ALONE
(Adam Watts)
I haven't looked beneath the surface
In a little too long
If that little monster in the basement isn't dead
Then he's stronger
Outside there's a cool wind blowing
Here by the fire there's a tension growing
(Chorus)
Hold me tight, tight, tight
Leave me alone
Leave me alone
Hold me right, right, right
Leave me alone
Out on my own
My message is mixed
Up to all my old tricks
I'm all cotton and then I'm a stone
Hold me tight, tight, tight
Leave me alone
I put my lightening in a bottle
And I sent it out to sea
Hoping the somebody would find it
And come save me
The ship comes and it finds me hiding
They have to drag me kicking and screaming
Chorus
(Bridge)
I want you here
And then I want you gone
Don't know my up or downs
My right or my wrongs
I want you here
But then I want you gone
I want you gone
Chorus
Leave me
Don't leave me alone
Leave me
Don't leave me alone
Baby leave me
Don't leave me alone
Leave me
Don't leave me alone
Leave me
Don't leave me alone
