about

There are all these little pockets of kinds of songs I find myself writing... I don't know, maybe 7 or 8 different categories that feel like home... they all share a common DNA (me)... but have distinct characteristics sonically, in overall tone (emotionally and/or feel wise in terms of the production and musicianship) and maybe even tend toward what you might consider a different genre... but generally end up between singer-songwriter or alternative vibes... though it kinda grosses me out to view things on those terms--which exist more so for marketing or commercial reasons to me.

Anyways... when I feel the need to take a long hard look in the mirror at myself and be brutally honest, I'm usually in a frustrated and possibly angry place... righteously angry at myself Sandor maybe "the world" (the way things just are)... and when that happens, I wanna hit the drums hard... the chords I seek out have a resolute driving ache to them and the lyrics are there to help me wrestle with Thoughts Versus Feelings conundrum... often metaphor becomes a tool for expression the barely -expressible and the music/arrangement, vocal performance and sonics (from sound choices to mix and mastering) all collect together to fill in the blanks in every way possible. This is a song that exists in the tension of trying to be a better person through brutal self-analyzation.

"A Reason to Grow" takes its place in this every-evolving corner of my head and catalog... hanging out with their kindred tunes, "Critical Condition"... "Would be a Loser"... "Come Around Again"... "The Hard Way"... "Poison Soul"... "My Heart My Head"... "Try"... "Reborn"... "Cage"... "Where to Begin"... "Here Hero and the Pain"... there're some examples from every album:)

It's not exactly music you throw on at a party (unless you throw awesomely weird parties). But for me, this has been one of the more raw and therapeutic ways creating music has been a blessing to me.

lyrics

A REASON TO GROW
(Adam Watts)

Hold me up
I'm about to fall face first
I confess I made them up
All of the reasons I'm a mess

I'm waking up into a dream
Where the only thing that's real is love
But it's not enough

(Chorus)
Give me light give me rain
A dying seed's in me
I need a reason to grow
Somewhere to be where I'm needed
I need a reason to be
Better than what I am
I'm not enough

Breaking stuff
I'm like a bull
In the place where they keep
All the fragile things they love

I go a little bit mad
Maybe they should lock me up
But it's not enough
